This picture was taken at 2:30 am on sunday morning in a hotel lobby at Comic Con last summer. After 5 years of trying to win Gerard Way’s signing at the Dark Horse booth for Umbrella Academy, I finally won. After wanting to do this for a long time, I had him sign my arm. I asked him to write “Keep it ugly”, which is something he’s been saying throughout the Danger Days era and then he added his autograph. Being the artist he is, he appraised his work for a minute before asking me if I wanted him to wipe it off and do it again. I said it was perfect. The imperfections is what made it perfect. His brother was there as well, so I had Mikey sign my arm as well.
I had it tattooed a couple hours later at a tattoo parlor a few blocks away. Then, nearly two days later, the last day of the convention, I ran into Gerard in the lobby of one of the hotels. He loved the way the tattoo came out, and even laughed at his brother’s “scribble” he called it. He was legitimately upset that I didn’t met Ray so he could add to it, who was also at the con that weekend. He proceeded to thank me multiple times, much to my dismay, because the last thing I wanted to do was cry in front of him like that. Somehow, I was able to speak and told him this tattoo, and once I add Frank and Ray, was the best thank you I could give the band. It would serve as a constant reminder of how much strength their music has given me the last nine years. And he still couldn’t stop telling me thank you. The honesty in his voice and humble smile he couldn’t wipe off his face nearly drew me to tears. Thank god they didn’t fall until after we took this picture.
One of the best moments of my life. After nine years of being a fan, I’d never thought I would have that opportunity. Now only to add Frank and Ray.
Thank you My Chemical Romance.
